OFFICIAL | Italy icon Giorgio Chiellini announces retirement

Italian football icon Giorgio Chiellini has announced his retirement from playing the sport after what has been a hugely illustrious career for the veteran.

Chiellini had joined MLS side Los Angeles after his stint at Juventus had ended and he was heralded for some of his performances. Recently, he admitted that he might have played his last game for the club.

The defender has now announced that he is hanging up his boots, after having played the game for about 18 years at the highest level throughout. He won nine Scudetti for the Bianconeri and while the Champions League title eluded him, he will go down as one of the greatest defenders Italy has ever produced.

He was a vital part of Juventus’ iconic BBC defensive trio, which also consisted of Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli and they guided the club to unprecedented success during their peaks.

Chiellini had retired from national team duties after the country’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup but he played 117 times for the Azzurri, scoring eight times as well.

The likelihood is that the 39-year-old is aiming to return to Juve in some capacity and there is a possibility that he could take a one-year break from the sport as well.
