Newcastle United explored a late summer move for Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi despite already signing Jacob Ramsey, per journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Manager Eddie Howe wanted to add depth in the middle of the park following Sean Longstaff’s departure.
Frattesi emerged as a top target for the Magpies alongside Aston Villa’s Ramsey, and they held initial talks with his representatives over a potential deal.
Newcastle eventually signed Ramsey for a fee worth £43 million, but they still approached Frattesi in the final days of the transfer window.
The Premier League club sought to understand the terms of a potential deal following injuries to Joelinton and Sandro Tonali.
The Serie A giants were keen to keep Frattesi and would only have considered a significant proposal.
With Tonali’s injury not deemed serious, the club decided against signing another midfielder and acquired forwards Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.
Newcastle lost Alexander Isak to Liverpool and failed to land many of their key targets this summer. However, they still had a productive transfer window.
The arrivals of Anthony Elanga, Woltemade and Wissa have bolstered their attack, while Ramsey is an upgrade on Longstaff in midfield.
Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale provides greater competition for Nick Pope, and Malick Thiaw is a quality addition in defence.
