Newcastle now ‘keeping an eye’ on £27m striker at St James’ Park

Newcastle United have ‘looked at’ Villarreal striker Nicolas Jackson, although he is not ‘top of the list’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The talented 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Estadio de la Cerámica in recent weeks after entering the final 10 months of his current £12,000-per-week contract.

What is the latest news involving Jackson?

A recent report from the Daily Mail has claimed that Newcastle are monitoring Jackson’s situation ahead of a potential move, although they could face stiff competition for his signature.

Fellow Premier League sides Everton and Aston Villa are also listed amongst the Senegalese’s admirers, while Catalan giants Barcelona are said to be taking a keen interest as well.

Villa may feel as though they have the upper hand in the race for Jackson’s signature, meanwhile, as Unai Emery has just swapped life at Villarreal for the Midlands outfit.

Football Insider previously stated that the versatile attacker has a £27 million release clause written into his contract, but Newcastle and co. are likely to try and negotiate that down in January.

Emery will now have a couple of months to assess his first-team squad before the market re-opens for business and the conclusions he draws may dictate where Jackson plies his trade next term.

What has Jones said about Jackson?

Newcastle strengthened their forward line with the club-record acquisition of Alexander Isak over the summer.

And Jones has disclosed that Jackson is not currently heading up Eddie Howe’s wish list with the winter window edging ever closer.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Newcastle have looked at him, but he’s not top of the list as I understand it. He’s just a player that they’ve kind of marked down to keep an eye on for the coming months.”

Would Jackson be a good signing for Newcastle?

Jackson has registered three goals and two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions for Villarreal this term, helping them advance from their Europa Conference League group.

However, star striker Callum Wilson has already found the back of the net on six occasions for Newcastle this season, and it’s unlikely that Jackson would displace him at this moment in time.

Alan Shearer celebrating scoring

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

Fellow forwards Allan Saint-Maximin and Isak have been injured for large periods of the season, while Miguel Almiron has arguably been in the best form of his career in 2022/23.

As a result, Newcastle will perhaps not be in a rush to secure Jackson’s signature due to the form and potential of Howe’s attacking options at present.
