Despite being one of the players Union Berlin specifically sought to offload in the most recent transfer window, 29-year-old Kevin Möhwald remained on the roster of the capital city’s Köpenick side. The veteran nevertheless qualifies as total dead weight, not even being selected for one of Urs Fischer’s matchday squads. Last year wasn’t much better. Möhwald made 21, mostly relief, appearances.

Möhwald expressed regret at leaving his former team SV Werder Bremen at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign when speaking on a podcast produced by Bremen’s fan-site “Deichstube”. The Erfurt-native also noted that he would be most pleased to return.

“Knowing what I know today, I wouldn’t make the same decision again,” Möhwald said on the podcast “Eingedeicht”,  “Last year was a disappointing season for me. I didn’t get the playing time I had hoped for. This season I have not one squad nomination to show.”

“It was a very difficult decision,” Möhwald recollected when reflecting on his move, “Union approached me with the prospect of playing European and top flight Bundesliga football. In terms of the package, it was the best decision I could have made at the time. But it was never a decision against Werder Bremen, it was a decision for the package of Union Berlin.”

“I don’t want to experience such a year again,” Möhwald continued, “I’ll pull through to the end of the season and see what the options are. The right opportunity hasn’t presented itself. Of course, Werder is an option. Apart from the relegation, I only have positive memories of the city. I still have the club and city in my heart. I follow Bremen intensively and, if possible, watch every game live.”
