Mohamed Salah’s comments about Arsenal and Manchester City’s title hopes have caused a big stir. The Egyptian King broke the record last season for most goal involvements in a 38-game campaign, helping Liverpool lift their second Premier League title in five years.
Over the summer, Liverpool further strengthened their squad in a bid to retain the crown won during Arne Slot’s maiden campaign, spending over £300 million on club-record signing Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and full-back duo Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. They also added teenager Giovanni Leoni for extra depth at centre-back, while anticipation grows for the arrivals of Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Despite this, Salah insists that the Reds are not favourites for this season’s title, and his reasoning for placing that unwanted label on Arsenal has not gone down well with those of an Emirates Stadium persuasion. He voiced his predictions to Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s early title clash at Anfield.
Salah Causes Big Stir After Naming Arsenal as the Title Favourites
Salah has previously commented on Arsenal’s title chances after the Gunners finished as runners-up for a third consecutive season last term. Achieving the same again this season would set a league record for most consecutive second-place finishes, but the Egyptian winger believes Mikel Arteta’s side will go one step further. He said (watch the full segment below):
“I’ve said it a few times, today and also at the PFA awards, I said they [Arsenal] are the favourites because they have been together for 5-6 years, so they understand each other’s game. Other teams like us and [Manchester] City have changed a lot of players, which can be tricky.”
Ordinarily, a direct title rival declaring the other as the favourites would be seen as a positive, but sections of Arsenal’s fanbase have been quick to criticise Salah’s comments, reminding him that Arteta’s side have also undergone a lot of changes since last season. “What’s Salah yapping about?” one X user questioned, “We’ve had more changes to our squad than Liverpool?”
A second user commented: “Has anyone told him Arsenal signed 8 new players?” while another added: “Won the league and dropped half a billion and still afraid to put any pressure on themselves. It’s yours to lose lads.” Elsewhere, a fourth wrote:
“This underdog gimmick they are trying to run when they are about to break the British transfer record twice in one window is really fascinating.”
Someone else concluded: “Underdog gimmick won’t work this time. For the first time ever, Liverpool are favourites for the PL and rightly so. You’re spending 400m and signing Isak, alongside Wirtz and Ekitike, there’s no hope for the rest. If Pool don’t win the league, then they’ve failed.”
In response to the unnecessary backlash Salah faced online, one Liverpool supporter said: “Arsenal fans always have high expectations for everyone but themselves.” It’ll certainly be interesting to see how they fare at Anfield on Sunday, and should Arteta fail to win major silverware again this term, his time at the helm could be under threat, especially after having spent £1.1 billion on transfers since his appointment in 2019.
