Francesco Camarda has for a few years now been deemed the next big thing to come in Italian football and on Sunday, he gave the best glimpse of it that he has so far. Still only 17, Camarda moved from Milan to Lecce on loan this summer in search of minutes. Lecce were losing to Bologna deep into added time when Camarda perfectly timed his jump and header to equalise in the 94th minute.
It was a first Serie A goal and man of the match for the player, who is expected to be Italy’s starting striker for a long time. This might feel like unnecessary pressure for a player still very young but with the country lagging behind other top nations when it comes to developing young players, a lot of expectations lie with Camarda.
This goal is merely the start. It was a bold move to leave Milan, where he had been all throughout his development journey and move to a club like Lecce, who are presently rock bottom in the division. However, it shows the confidence in abilities that he and the people around him have. The first one has gone in and many, many more are expected to follow as the years go by.
