Former FC Metz captain Matthieu Udol (29) will return to the Stade Saint-Symphorien this evening with his new side, RC Lens, following a bitter summer exit. Udol, a Metz native who first joined his hometown club 19 years ago, was the subject of much controversy when he forced through a transfer to Les Sang et Or after leading Metz back to the top flight.
Udol skipped the Metz’s preseason, while Stéphane Le Mignan admonished his captain in the press, “If we were still in Ligue 2, I could understand. But we’re in Ligue 1 now! I’m focused on the players who want to work.” However, Udol pointed the finger of blame back at the club, explaining that the situation was caused by the club reneging on a promise to let him leave.
The club have not swiftly forgotten the circumstances of his exit, and according to a report from L’Équipe, denied a request from the player to have tickets for his family for their reunion later today. Despite this, it’s expected that Udol will receive a warm reception from his old teammates and the supporters in what will be a bittersweet return.
