Manchester United could appoint Gareth Southgate as new head coach if they decide to sack Ruben Amorim.
According to talkSPORT, the club’s minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been in direct contact with Southgate in recent weeks.
The English boss was considered when the Red Devils named Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in November last year. But it is said Southgate didn’t want to return to management at the time.
Amorim is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford after a disastrous start to the 2025-26 season.
Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford means United have registered just seven points from six Premier League matches to drop down to 14th in the table.
Meanwhile, they have already been dumped out of the Carabao Cup after losing to League Two side Grimsby Town.
The club’s hierarchy could be forced to pull the trigger if Amorim fails to win the coming home fixture against newly-promoted Sunderland before the international break.
Southgate is a name under consideration but United supporters are unlikely to be happy if they appoint him.
The 55-year-old failed to win any silverware during his time as England’s manager between 2016 and 2024.
He won 57 out of 91 games in charge, but the record is underwhelming given the quality of players at his disposal.
Southgate also managed Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009, where he posted a 29.8 win percentage after losing 63 of 151 matches.
The English boss also insists on playing defensively and picks players regardless of their club form.
