Man Utd Players Want Amorim to Give Chance to Forgotten Ace After Poor Start to Season

Manchester United secured their first win of the season on the weekend after Bruno Fernandes’ last-gasp penalty saw them pick up all three points in a 3-2 victory over Burnley. Despite being in high spirits, reports have suggested that Ruben Amorim’s players are wanting a forgotten ace to be handed a start.

It’s been a hodgepodge start to the season for the Premier League giants, who have already been knocked out of the League Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby Town. In the league, as we enter the first international break, they’ve picked up four points.

Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to the Etihad Stadium to face local rivals Manchester City – and they’ll have to be at their very best in order to overcome Pep Guardiola’s side, who are looking to rub shoulders with Liverpool at the top of the table. But could there be an unfamiliar face in United’s starting line-up?

United spent well in the summer transfer window by adding the trio of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to their beleaguered front line; but the ongoing issues in the middle of the park and inbetween the sticks continue to rumble on.

In terms of the latter, neither Andre Onana nor Altay Bayindir have filled the Old Trafford faithful with hope since the start of the current campaign and that’s exactly why Royal Antwerp glovesman Senne Lammens and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa have been linked with a summer move to the club.

But could Amorim – widely regarded as one of the best young managers in world football – already have the issue under wraps?

According to The Sun, United players believe that Tom Heaton – who is outperforming both Onana and Bayindir in training – could be the antidote, whether that be temporarily or on a long-term basis, to their ongoing goalkeeper woes. Sources told SunSport:

“Judging it on performances on the training pitch, some of the lads think Tom deserves a chance. He’s very experienced, looks after himself and is a key member of the squad. The other two are struggling at the moment, so why not give Tom a go?”

A three-cap England international, 39, Heaton returned to the club in the summer of 2021 from Aston Villa and, since his arrival, has played a mere four competitive games, twice in 2021/22 and twice in the following campaign under Erik ten Hag.

He managed to feature in United’s pre-season tour of the United States, impressing fans in their 4-1 win over fellow Premier League side Bournemouth. Born and raised in Chester, the seasoned goalkeeper graduated from United’s youth ranks in 2005 and was subject to a myriad of loan spells until 2010.

Joining Cardiff City on a free transfer, Heaton remained patient and eventually became a mainstay in Burnley’s goal between 2013 and 2019 as he racked up 200 appearances for the Clarets.

But will he get a chance to shine for United under Amorim? Time will tell, of course, given that Manchester City is next on the agenda for the Red Devils. By then, there is every chance that either one of Lammens or Martinez will be standing between the sticks.
