Manchester United edged out Chelsea in a scrappy win on Saturday afternoon, finally giving under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim something to be positive about as his side secured only their second victory of the Premier League season.
Early first-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro were enough for United to claim a narrow 2-1 win, despite Chelsea piling on late pressure and pulling one back through Trevoh Chalobah’s header 10 minutes from time.
A frantic encounter saw both sides finish with 10 men, following early red cards for Robert Sanchez and Casemiro. It marked the first Premier League game since October 2014 (Chelsea v Crystal Palace) in which both sides received red cards in the first half.
While United fans had plenty of reasons to be jubilant, including Fernandes’ 8/10 display despite once again playing in a deeper role, one performance has seemingly concerned them, with some urging Amorim to drop one of his underperforming stars.
Amorim Must Drop Amad After Chelsea Win
Man United fans were particularly concerned about Amad Diallo’s display against Chelsea, with the Ivorian winger struggling to convince after being handed a second consecutive start at No. 10, in place of summer signing Matheus Cunha.
One United fan on X (formerly Twitter) argued that Amad may have played his worst game in a United shirt on Saturday afternoon: “This might be the worst game I’ve seen from Amad and that’s my guy but I have to be honest. He’s not been good enough so far this season, he needs some time on bench.”
Another said the 23-year-old should start on the bench after being ‘a shadow of himself’: “Amad Diallo should start the next game on the bench. When we have got depth, we should make use of it. He has been a shadow of himself this season.”
One fan claimed the Ivorian is a different player than he was last term: “Amad has been shocking this season so far. No control, no urgency, no final product. Such a different player compared to last season. Love him but he needs to step up double time or gets dropped to the bench.”
Others echoed similar frustration, saying:
“We’ve got to call a spade a spade. Amad’s been abysmal this season, probably thinking he’s made it!”
“Let’s be real, Amad needs to be benched for the foreseeable future.”
“Amad needs to be dropped.”
“Amad’s going back to the bench on the back of that showing. He has been terrible this season so far.”
With Cunha now back from injury and Noussair Mazraoui occupying the right wing-back spot, Amad is surely in danger of being dropped by Amorim, who has fielded the Ivorian in the starting XI in all four of United’s last Premier League games.
Amad registered his only goal contribution of the season during the 3-2 home win over Burnley, winning a late penalty that Fernandes converted.
