Manchester United could have ‘an £80million player on their hands’ as they look to tie Alejandro Garnacho down to a new long-term contract at Old Trafford, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.
Red Devils chief Erik ten Hag is keen for the talented youngster to agree fresh terms after breaking into his plans.
Man United contract news – Alejandro Garnacho
According to the Mirror, Manchester United have set their sights on tying Garnacho down to the longest contract in the club’s history.
The report suggests the Red Devils are pushing for the winger to pen an eight-year deal, but his family and close advisors are not keen to commit to more than a four-year agreement while there is also a disagreement over wages.
Garnacho’s current contract, which is worth £5,000-per-week, is due to expire in the summer of 2024 and that has led to uncertainty over where his long-term future lies.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently told GiveMeSport that Manchester United have held positive discussions with the 18-year-old and they are relaxed over the situation.
The Red Devils have insisted that Garnacho is not for sale after La Liga giants Real Madrid and Serie A outfit Juventus showed interest, while Atletico Madrid have been wanting to lure him back to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
What has Dean Jones said about Garnacho?
Although the offer of an eight-year deal has been met with resistance, Jones understands why Manchester United are keen for Garnacho to sign on the dotted line.
The respected journalist feels the Argentinian has already shown he has enough talent to become a big-money asset.
Jones told GiveMeSport: “It makes sense that United would want this style of contract. To be honest, anywhere else he goes, the length of contract isn’t going to be far off of this, at this point, anyway.
“It’s all about securing his value and United know that if it goes well over the next 18 months, they’ve got an £80million player on their hands here.”

Would it be a big boost if Garnacho signs a new contract?
Garnacho has already racked up seven goal contributions in 19 Manchester United appearances, according to Transfermarkt, so it is obvious that he is bursting with talent.
The appointment of ten Hag as the Red Devils’ boss, which was rubber-stamped during the closing stages of the 2021/22 campaign before he moved into the hot seat last summer, has also paid off for the South American.
That is because the vast majority of his opportunities have come since the Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford and ten Hag has also described Garnacho as having ‘individual skills that can make the difference’ while also being able to ‘contribute on the highest level’.
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is another fan of the teenager, who he has labelled ‘dangerous’.
Garnacho highlighted his capabilities during the comeback win over arch-rivals Manchester City earlier this month, with Sofascore statistics showing he grabbed an assist on his way to a 7.0 match rating, and it is clear that the Red Devils should do all they can to reach an agreement over fresh terms.
