Man Utd have ‘always had concerns’ over £375k-a-week star at Old Trafford

Manchester United star David De Gea’s Old Trafford future is still up in the air because there has ‘always been concerns’ over his ability on the ball, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The goalkeeper has been on the Red Devils’ books since completing an £18.9million move from Atletico Madrid 11 years ago, but there are doubts over whether he will remain at the club beyond the end of the season.

What’s the latest news involving De Gea?

Although De Gea’s £375,000-per-week contract is due to expire next summer, Manchester United have the option of extending the agreement by 12 months.

But there are doubts over whether the Red Devils will exercise their right to keep the Spaniard, who has chalked up 498 appearances for the club, beyond the campaign’s climax.

That is because the Telegraph have revealed Manchester United are weighing up whether they should hold onto De Gea.

The report suggests the 20-time English top flight champions’ wage bill reached a Premier League record £384million for last season and their financial situation will dictate how they act over the 31-year-old.

Although doubts over his future persist and there was a change in management following Erik ten Hag’s appointment in the summer, De Gea has played every minute of Manchester United’s season.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about De Gea?

O’Rourke has called on De Gea to focus on his performances rather than his contract situation over the coming weeks.

The journalist feels doubts over the shot-stopper’s capabilities with the ball at his feet are refusing to go away.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “There have been lots of rumours about David De Gea’s long-term future at Manchester United.

“Will they take up their option to extend his contract or possibly let him run down his contract?

“David De Gea needs to focus on his football and trying to impress Erik ten Hag, but there’s always been those concerns around him, especially with starting attacks from the back and how good he is on the ball as well.”

Have Manchester United been linked with any De Gea replacements?

Although De Gea’s services could be retained and Dean Henderson will return from his season-long loan at Nottingham Forest next summer, it seems ten Hag has already looked at recruiting a new first choice goalkeeper.

Manchester United have reportedly made Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak a priority target, while the Red Devils are also considering a move for Everton custodian Jordan Pickford.

The Premier League giants sent scouts to watch Porto’s Diogo Costa during his current employers’ win over Braga and he is adept with the ball at his feet.
