Man United did not send an official bid for Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez

According to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will remain at Villa Park for the 2025/26 season.

Martinez, who has firmly established himself as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers since arriving from Arsenal in 2020, had been the subject of rumours in recent weeks.

Manchester United explored the possibility of bringing the Argentine shot-stopper to Old Trafford as they were looking to replace the error-prone Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

However, Romano has confirmed that while United opened initial discussions, they never progressed to the stage of submitting an official bid.

Man United agreed personal terms with Emiliano Martinez

In the last few days, United even agreed personal terms with the World Cup winning goalkeeper to bring him to Old Trafford.

The World Cup-winning goalkeeper was also linked with potential suitors in Turkey, but Romano reports that Martínez was not attracted to a move to the Turkish Super Lig and made clear his preference was to continue competing at the highest level in England.

The goalkeeper was widely expected to leave Villa this summer after his emotional gesture towards the fans in Aston Villa’s final game of last season but a move away from Villa Park did not materialise for the experienced goalkeeper.

At one stage, it looked like he would become the new Man United goalkeeper as Ruben Amorim was actively searching the market to solve one of his team’s biggest issues.

From Aston Villa’s perspective, the news comes as a major boost. Martinez is a cornerstone of Unai Emery’s project, bringing both world-class ability between the posts and an invaluable presence in the dressing room.

Although the player personally would have preferred a move to United this summer but the Red Devils have sorted that position now with the signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Romano further explains that Villa are “happy to continue” with Martinez as their undisputed number one, with the club showing no desire to enter into negotiations over a sale. With the player himself settled and prepared to stay, the situation is now considered closed.
