Manchester City supporters have torn into an ‘awful’ ace who got ‘eaten alive’ during their 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. Pep Guardiola welcomed Rodri back to his Premier League starting lineup for the first time in 343 days, but despite taking the lead in the first half through Erling Haaland, couldn’t return to winning ways.
Former City midfielder James Milner became the second-oldest player to score in England’s top flight when he calmly converted a penalty in the 67th minute. Brajan Gruda then completed Brighton’s comeback in the 89th minute, rounding James Trafford to secure the Seagulls’ first league win of the season.
All told, it was an underwhelming display from the serial Premier League winners of the last decade. Guardiola has insisted the club is in a rebuild phase following their January and summer transfer activity, but it hasn’t taken long for one of their high-profile signings, Rayan Ait-Nouri, to raise some early concerns.
Rayan Ait-Nouri Slammed After Brighton Loss
Ait-Nouri, signed from Wolves for £31 million over the summer, prides himself on being a modern full-back who prefers joining the attack. But on Saturday, it was his total lack of defensive contribution that proved costly.
Across his 90-minute outing, he lost possession 12 times and won just five of 14 ground duels. Add to that a single successful dribble from three attempts and a 78 per cent passing accuracy, and it’s clear why City fans poured out of the Amex Stadium infuriated.
“Minteh is giving nightmares to Ait Nouri!” one X user remarked, “Ait Nouri is never gonna forget this cooking from Minteh!” A second user added: “Ait Nouri is getting cooked, oh my days,” as third wrote (watch his role in Brighton’s winning goal below):
“[Rayan] Ait Nouri is getting eaten alive right there.”
A fourth X user commented: “Ait Nouri might be having one of the worst performances right now. The guy is good but what a bad day.” Elsewhere, a fifth concluded: “Ait Nouri been the worst player on the pitch by far. I thought he could hack the LW but this is the biggest bozo cameo I’ve seen.”
Since becoming Man City boss in 2016, Guardiola’s biggest headache has been finding a long-term left-back. After Ait-Nouri’s performance this weekend, he will be hoping that problem doesn’t deepen this season.
