Liverpool accept defeat as Real Madrid close in on defensive star

Real Madrid have reportedly convinced Liverpool defensive star Ibrahima Konate to join them as a free agent next summer.

Xabi Alonso has focused on his defence in recent months, with three new defenders coming in, as Konate’s former clubmate Trent Alexander-Arnold landed in Madrid.

Alvaro Carreras has also joined in to boost Alonso’s left-back options with Spain international Dean Huijsen coming in as a long-term option at centre-back.

However, amid ongoing concerns over Antonio Rudiger’s long-term status in the Spanish capital, Konate is the La Liga giants No.1 target.

Konate has been locked in contract extension talks on Merseyside since the start of 2025, as his current deal expires at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, and the club hierarchy want an answer before the end of August.

Liverpool are desperate to avoid a situation where Konate leaves the club for free in 2026 but that is Real Madrid’s plan for him.

As per the latest update from the Daily Mirror, Liverpool have now admitted defeat in their ability to keep Konate, as the France star has now accepted the offer put forward by Real Madrid to his representatives.

Real Madrid can officially begin talks in January, but he will remain part of Arne Slot’s squad, as no transfer fee will be paid before the September 1 deadline.

Liverpool wanted £35m to sell him Konate, but due to Real Madrid’s insistence on not paying above £21m, the deal was derailed.

With Konate’s stance more established, Liverpool are expected to push ahead with their drive to bring in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is also out of contract in 2026.

The England international could land at Anfield before the deadline, with Palace keen to secure a fee of around £30m, to avoid a similar free exit in 2026.

Liverpool are also expected to make a deadline day £130m offer for Alexander Isak after Newcastle United agreed a deal to sign Germany international Nick Woltemade.
