Caen centre-forward Alexandre Mendy (30) has agreed to join EFL Championship side Sunderland FC, according to a report from Foot Mercato this Friday. The 30-year-old has topped Ligue 2’s goalscoring charts last season with 22 strikes. Mendy is not expected to stick around in Normandy considering he did not travel to the Ligue 2 team’s preseason training camp in Switzerland. The former Brest and Bordeaux was of interest to a handful of clubs such as Saudi Pro League Al-Riyad, Egyptian outfit Al Ahly or Serie B side Sampdoria.
The Guinea Bissau international exclusively told the outlet he would join Sunderland AFC. “By the time Sunderland came along, there was no debate anymore. It’s a sporting choice and I’m really looking forward to starting this new journey”, Alexandre Mendy told Foot Mercato. The Black Cats only need now to strike an agreement with Ligue 2 side Caen, with which Mendy is under contract until 2026, over the transfer fee.
