LeBron James has begun an unprecedented 23rd season in the NBA, even though he’ll have to wait a few weeks before taking the floor for the first time.
The
L.A. Lakers‘ superstar is currently out with sciatica on his right side and will not make his season debut until mid-November.
But when he returns, James will likely still be one of the best players in the league, even at age 40. And the Los Angeles Lakers need their superstar forward to be sharp if they want to contend for an 18th championship.
Throughout his decorated career, LeBron has gone up against some of the greatest players of all time, virtually seeing it all. As he eventually passes down the torch, the veteran forward was recently asked about who are his favorite stars to watch in today’s NBA.
On an episode of “Mind the Game” James named four very different players.
Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama is a generational talent who is a potential future face of the league. The
San Antonio Spurs‘ center is the tallest player in the league at 7’5 tall while having the agility and skill set of a guard.
If the 21-year-old Frenchman can stay relatively healthy, he is the favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year every year for the foreseeable future.
As for the offensive end, Victor worked extensively this offseason with Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett, improving his post-up game.
The sky is the limit for Wembanyama, and he is absolutely must-see TV in his third season.
“Obviously, Wemby is one of those guys. When you see Wemby, you want to see what he’s going to do every night. He is a special talent, and you wanna see if they can kind of make a little jump in their franchise.”
Giannis Antetokounmpo
The Greek Freak is the ultimate NBA success story, developing from a little-known mid-first-round pick out of Athens to one of the greatest players of his generation.
Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s has undergone a remarkable body transformation throughout his career and used that added size to become an unstoppable force at the basket.
The
Milwaukee Bucks‘ superstar is a perennial candidate for league MVP and, at just 30-year-old, still has plenty of years to give to the game. Giannis’ inclusion on LeBron’s list is certainly not a surprise.
“Next is Giannis, you wanna see what Giannis can do. I love watching Giannis.”
Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic is the consensus pick for best player in the world right now, and the
Denver Nuggets‘ legend brings a transcendent combination of size, skill, and incredible touch.
The three-time MVP became the third player ever to average a triple-double last season while maintaining his remarkably high efficiency.
Jokic is a basketball savant’s dream to watch, and LeBron has had an up-close look at the superstar center throughout his entire career.
Should Nikola win another championship in his career, he will begin to enter top 10 of all-time rankings, and he is still squarely in his prime.
Devin Booker
This is certainly the most surprising selection on LeBron James list. You won’t find Devin Booker too high on the best player in the NBA lists, but the
Phoenix Suns‘ guard has a fundamental-based, graceful game that has been consistently excellent throughout his ten-year career.
The 28-year-old led Phoenix back to the NBA Finals in 2021 and was two victories away from leading this franchise to its first Larry O’Brien Trophy.
It wasn’t meant to be, and the Suns have since, time and time again, come up short despite their various bold moves. Now Phoenix enters a somewhat new era, hoping that a younger supporting cast will help get Booker back to the playoffs.
Devin will have to play point guard on this team, which is something he’s done in the past. LeBron ultimately summed up his list while recapping his excitement for this upcoming season as both a player and fan of basketball.
With many teams having large expectations, it’s bound to be a thrilling basketball season. Even though the
Oklahoma City Thunder are the on-paper favorite to repeat this season, there’s a lot more parity in today’s NBA than in past decades.
“I love watching Book, as well. I’m a big Devin Booker fan. There’s gonna be some opportunities for us to sit back and just watch and see how this whole thing plays out.”
