Las Palmas vs Tenerife Preview

Las Palmas and Tenerife face off in the big Canary Islands derby this Saturday. It’s the first meeting since Tenerife won both legs of a Play-Off Semi Final earlier this year and revenge will certainly be on the minds of the hosts.
Despite losing that clash and missing out on promotion, Las Palmas have returned the stronger of the two teams this season. They spent much of the campaign in the top two and impressed early on despite numerous injury problems. They have faltered a bit in recent weeks though and come into this game needing to get back on track if they want to remain firmly in automatic promotion contention.
They are still flying high in 3rd coming into this weekend but are 4 without a win in the league with just 2 goals scored in that period. That run saw them lose two games before 1-1 draws against fellow promotion hopefuls Eibar and Levante. They did look more like their old selves in Valencia last weekend with 17 attempts on goal (10 more than their opponents) and 63% possession against in-form Levante. Marc Cardona’s 95th minute leveller should at least see them head into this game in slightly better spirits.
Tenerife by contrast, haven’t been anywhere near as convincing this season after missing out against Girona in the Play-Off Final. However they do come into this one following back-to-back wins. Luis Miguel Ramis will be hoping this is the start of a real turnaround in their fortunes following victories to nil against Huesca and Burgos.
One big difference for Tenerife this season has been their away form. They were fantastic travellers last term, winning more than half of their road games which was key in their ability to reach the play-offs. However it has been a different story this time around with 5 losses in their 8 fixtures away from the Canary Islands and just the one victory.

Score Prediction: Las Palmas 0-0 Tenerife
These games are almost always tight and we’ve not seen either win a league derby in Gran Canaria by more than a single goal this century. Tenerife’s recent upturn in form and Las Palmas’ recent wobbles suggest the hosts may struggle to make the most of their status as favourites and we’re unlikely to see many, if any, goals with neither side looking that prolific.
