Bruno Labbadia has emerged as a “serious candidate” for the position as VfB Stuttgart coach, according to Sky Germany.
Michel Wimmer has served as interim coach since October, when Pellegrino Matarazzo was relieved of his duties as head coach.
There remains a chance that Wimmer will stay in charge long term, with former FC Copenhagen coach Jess Thorup and current Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder also said to in contention for the job.
Labbadia has coached a number of Bundesliga clubs in the past, including VfB Stuttgart from December 2010 to August 2013.
