New 1. FC Köln head Lukas Kwasniok shared a laugh with journalists at his Thursday pre-match press conference. Kwasniok – finding himself getting accustomed to a rapidly shifting personnel landscape at the newly promoted Bundesliga outfit – delayed the full vote on the team’s leadership council until after the September international break. Kwasniok elicited some chuckles when answering a question about this.
Kwasniok did name keeper Marvin Schwäbe his new captain shortly before the start of Bundesliga play. Schwäbe and the rest of the team voted on the rest of the leadership council this weekend. Kwasniok revealed that Schwäbe’s vote counted double in the team referendum. Kwasniok couldn’t resist making reference to a popular German talent search reality program.
The RTL produced “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” (one of endless clones of Britain’s “Pop Idol“) features an expert panel of German musical professionals. Singer, producer, and songwriter Dieter Bohlen (a sort of German version of Simon Cowell) famously maintains a double-vote on the jury whenever there’s a deadlock.
“We voted today,” Kwasniok said at the presser. “Isn’t that wonderful? Please don’t make this into a headline, but in the event that a tiebreaker was needed, Marvin Schwäbe’s vote counted as two. It’s just like with Dieter Bohlen at DSDS. That’s not to compare Schwäbe with Bohlen, and I say that with Schwäbe’s reputation rather than Bohlen’s in mind.”
Köln’s new leadership council will feature summer returnee Ron-Robert Zieler as the vice captain. Certified club man Jan Thielmann will represent the veteran club corps while new summer addition Marius Bülter will bring a fresh impetus, along with extensive experience, to the Geißböcke locker room.
