The hosts attempted their first shot right from kickoff through Mohamed Amoura, but they were also quick to see the first yellow card of the game. Aaron Zehnter was cautioned in the third minute after his foul on Adrián Kaprálik to stop a counterattack move by Kiel.
Another foul on Kaprálik by Jenson Seelt proved costly for Wolfsburg in the 36th minute. The Dutch center-back was shown a yellow card seven minutes earlier, and it meant the hosts had to play the rest of the match with ten players.
And they conceded before the half-time break. Once again, Kapralik caused all the trouble for Wolfsburg’s defense as Vini Souza’s challenge on the Slovakian striker resulted in a penalty-kick. The captain, Alexander Bernhardsson, took the responsibility with aplomb to put Kiel in front.
Although they played the majority of the game with ten men, Wolfsburg pushed for an equalizer after the break. Amoura, Konstantinos Koulierakis, and Patrick Wimmer failed to convert clear chances in a dominant half by the hosts.
Wolfsburg are yet to win at home this season, while Kiel now progress to the Round of 16 for the first time in five years.
