Borussia Mönchengladbach have reached a total agreement with Benfica to sign Julian Weigl (26) on loan.
As reported by Sky Germany, Weigl will undergo his Gladbach medical on Thursday ahead of signing a contract. The defensive-midfielder could also be in Daniel Farke’s squad for Sunday’s game vs Mainz.
After weeks of negotiations, Farke appears to have secured his desired player for the No. 6 role. BMG and Weigl had an agreement for some time but if the player was to leave this summer, Benfica had a preference to sell. But because of Gladbach’s financial situation and Weigl’s desire to return to the Bundesliga, SLB have settled on a loan agreement.
Initially, Benfica wanted between €15m and €20m for Weigl, too much for Borussia. If everything goes to plan, the 26-year-old will return to the Bundesliga.
Weigl played 171 games across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund before leaving for Benfica in 2020.
