Jenni Hermoso scored an 89th-minute winner as Spain beat Italy 1-0 tonight.
Hermoso hadn’t played since the infamous World Cup final in August and the events that followed, where Luis Rubiales kissed her on the lips causing a huge scandal.
Tonight’s Nations League game against Italy was Hermoso’s first since August 20. She came on as a substitute and scored the winner with only minutes to go in the game. The Spanish forward converted a rebound after Alexia Putellas’ shot was saved by the Italian goalkeeper.
New Spanish head coach Montse Tomé left Hermoso out of the national team squad last month as she wanted to protect her and let her recover from what happened at the World Cup.
Tomé took over after former boss Jorge Vilda was sacked in September. Vilda lost his job as a result of the Rubiales scandal which dragged several people into a messy situation in Spain.
Hermoso will be hoping that her goal tonight can be the start of a new chapter in her career.
