Jean-Louis Gasset to return to Montpellier on short-term deal

Jean-Louis Gasset’s return to Montpellier HSC is set to be confirmed in the coming hours, according to a report from L’Équipe.

Montpellier sacked Michel Der Zakarian with the club rock-bottom of Ligue 1 and having conceded 26 goals in just eight games. The writing was on the wall and in the wake of a 5-0 defeat against Olympique de Marseille at the Stade de la Mosson, president Laurent Nicollin acted swiftly. Der Zakarian wasn’t even afforded the time to conduct his post-match media duties with Nicollion instead taking the microphone and telling broadcaster DAZN that the manager had been relieved of his duties.

It hasn’t take long to nominate a successor. According to L’Équipe, the deal to bring Gasset back to MHSC has been in the works for around a month. His arrival for a third stint is set to be confirmed by the club in the coming hours, and he will sign a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Gasset had announced his retirement from management following a mixed spell in interim charge of Olympique de Marseille last season, however, he has been talked out of retirement by the club where his managerial career began – Montpellier. As the club celebrates its 50th anniversary, he now has the task of saving them from the drop.
