Iñigo Martínez’s future at Athletic Bilbao remains uncertain

Whilst it is very unlikely that Barcelona will sign Iñigo Martínez from Athletic Bilbao this transfer window, the future of the Basque defender remains uncertain.

As broken by Patxo de la Rica at Relevo, the Blaugrana are not considering to sign Martínez this summer.

Last week the Catalan side submitted a €15 million offer to sign the 31-year-old, which Athletic Bilbao firmly rejected. However, the approach served more as a warning than anything else as both clubs know that as things stand the player will become a free agent come June 2023.

With the recent arrival of Jules Koundé and negotiations reaching their final stages regarding the transfer of Marcos Alonso from Chelsea, the signing of Martínez is not a priority for Barça at the moment.

It appears that the club are willing to wait until January 2023 to continue negotiations when they could potentially arrive at a more favourable deal.

Martínez is not showing any signs that he wants to renew his contract with Athletic Bilbao.
