Adrien Rabiot (30) has called his Olympique de Marseille exit “incomprehensible” and “a form of betrayal” in an interview with RTL France.
A year after joining Marseille as a free agent, Rabiot was shown the exit door, returning to Italy, where he would become an AC Milan player. The midfielder had been a part of Marseille’s squad last season, helping the team plot their return to the UEFA Champions League.
However, the fallout from an opening day defeat to Stade Rennais would quickly pull the curtain shut on his involvement in Marseille’s 2025/26 campaign. In the dressing room, Rabiot would be involved in a physical altercation with teammate Jonathan Rowe.
Marseille president, Pablo Longoria, would go on to call the fight, “an event of gravity and violence, that is extreme, something unheard of.” Both players were suspended and then transfer-listed, with each being sold to a Serie A Side. Rabiot’s mother would criticise the club before his deadline day departure, telling La Provence, “It’s a betrayal. They praised him for a season and then shot him down and smeared his image. It’s very serious.”
A sentiment that Rabiot returned to in a wide-ranging interview, the France international would tell RTL, “I had a lot of fun during the season and I was able to bring Marseille back to the Champions League – not only me, of course… but in the end, like everyone else, [I felt] incomprehension… and a form of betrayal.”
