Arsenal icon Ian Wright responded to Paul Scholes’ claims over Arsenal’s Premier League title credentials and forced the former Manchester United midfielder to clarify his point
Ian Wright prompted Paul Scholes to amend his statement that Arsenal could potentially be the worst Premier League champions ever if they clinch the title this season. Scholes clarified that he meant ‘most boring’, after Wright highlighted that Manchester United won the league in the 1996/97 season with the lowest-ever Premier League points total of 75.
Wright accepted the clarification, stating he would embrace being labelled boring if it meant Arsenal winning their first league title in nearly 22 years. However, he firmly rejected the notion that they could be the worst champions in Premier League history, as initially suggested by Scholes.
On The Good, the Bad and the Football, Scholes had previously stated: “If Arsenal win the league, this could be the worst team to win the league.”
He continued: “If you’re thinking of picking a team of the season and picking the front four, nobody from the Arsenal team gets in that. Look at previous champions – Liverpool’s forwards, brilliant.”

Mohamed Salah was included in the PFA Team of the Season last year, while Sadio Mane was selected when Liverpool first won the Premier League in 2020.
Scholes further commented: “Possibly the only one is [Bukayo] Saka, and I don’t think he’s been brilliant. He’s not scored many goals this year or assists.”
Saka has contributed four goals and three assists in the Premier League this season.
Gary Neville referred to Paul Scholes’ comments during episode 114 of Stick to Football, stating: “I’m not even gonna mention his comment that they’re gonna be the worst team ever to win the title.”
Ian Wright quickly retorted: “Man United team that won with 7- if we win it, we win it with more than 77 [it was 75] points, like you lot won it. Like, ‘f***s sake Scholesy! I said: ‘Is that my mate here?’ Reading this, ‘it’s my mate!'”
Neville replied: “He’s just shooting from the hip, he’s just [gunshot sounds].”
Scholes then clarified: “I meant to say the most boring team, not the worst team, sorry. You will be boring, it doesn’t matter how you do it, does it? Doesn’t matter how you do it.”
Wright concurred, adding: “I’d take boring and win. I’m very excited because I believe, yes, we do have to win it, we do have to win it, and I’m confident enough that we will do it, I’m confident.”
Arsenal currently lead the Premier League by four points, ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa.
