“I still need to improve”

New Werder Bremen forward Keke Topp knows he still has a lot of room for improvement.

After scoring a hat-trick in his first competitive match for Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal against Energie Cottbus, Keke Topp has yet to find the back of the net in the Bundesliga.

He started Werder’s league opener against Augsburg, but was substituted at the break and came off the bench for the following match against Borussia Dortmund.

And in an interview with Bild, Topp, who played for Schalke 04 in the 2. Bundesliga last season, admits that the step up to the Bundesliga is bigger than he thought.

“I didn’t think the difference would be that big. There are fewer spaces. The players are more technical and much smarter. In the second division, it’s more about fighting and long balls,” Topp said.

“It’s normal that I still need to improve, I’m not at the end of my development yet. I’d rather take many small steps than one big leap very quickly.”

Topp admitted he was disappointed to be dropped from the starting lineup in favor of Justin Njinmah, but added:

“I’m not happy that I was on the bench, but I’m not angry with the coach at all.”
