‘I Played Against Messi & Ronaldo

Having spent his entire career in the Premier League, Alex Iwobi has come up against some very special names. Whether it be earlier on in his playing days with Arsenal, with Everton or now with Fulham, he’s faced off against some of the very best footballers that the beautiful game has to offer.

He’s taken on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and even played against Lionel Messi in a European fixture during his time at the Emirates Stadium. As such, when he was recently asked to name the best player he’s ever faced in his career, the majority of fans would expect him to name one of those two. The pair are considered some of the very best footballers of all time and many incredible stars have named one of them as their greatest opponent.

That wasn’t the case for Iwobi, though, and despite being a former Arsenal man and coming through the club’s academy, he opted to choose a former Tottenham Hotspur man as the best footballer he ever played against.

Despite playing against Messi and Ronaldo at one time or another during his career, Iwobi recently revealed that Mousa Dembele is the best player he came up against. During an appearance on a podcast, with clips shared on X (Twitter), he was asked to name his greatest opponent and he said:

“Obviously I’ve played against [Lionel] Messi, played against [Cristiano] Ronaldo, but for me, and I hate to say it because he did play for Tottenham… Mousa Dembele.

“He was a joke. When you play against him, you understand. He does things. You can’t get the ball off of him. Left foot is insane. He was insane. He could control the midfield by himself.”

Iwobi isn’t the first player to heap praise on Dembele following a solid career that saw the Belgian play for Fulham and Spurs, becoming one of Tottenham’s greatest Premier League players, before he moved on to Guangzhou City.
