Those tuning into Trabzonspor’s 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce on Sunday night have delivered their verdict on Andre Onana following his debut. The Cameroonian goalkeeper, who became something of a laughing stock during his time at Manchester United, finally completed his loan move to the Turkish side last week.
Thrown straight into the deep end with a start against second-placed Fenerbahce away from home, the 29-year-old was eager to impress his new teammates, coaches, and supporters. After all, in the Premier League, he was best known for an unwanted statistic: committing more errors leading to goals than any other player during his tenure.
A familiar pattern at United has seen players with strong reputations elsewhere leave the club only to shine again, proving the Red Devils may have been the real problem. Onana may be facing some criticism for his role in the goal that decided the match, but his overall display suggests that same pattern could well continue to haunt Ruben Amorim.
How Andre Onana Performed on Trabzonspor Debut
In recent years, an Onana performance wouldn’t be one without a mistake. That’s why it was hardly surprising to see the former Inter Milan shot-stopper handle a tame shot very poorly before former United target Youssef En-Nesyri tucked away the rebound. Watch the goal below (see 03:34):
Apart from that one moment, however, Onana produced a performance not seen from him in years. He faced 29 shots, made eight saves, and prevented an expected goals tally of 1.63.
His efforts earned him a Man of the Match rating of 8.7 from FotMob, and such a display will no doubt help him settle into his new surroundings with more ease than anyone could have ever dreamt of. See below:
Fans Drop Verdict After Onana Masterclass
The reception of Onana’s performance has been largely positive on social media. While some X users were quick to call him out for his lapse in concentration that led to the goal, many more were quicker to question Man United about his sudden return to form and lay praise on him.
One X user remarked: “McTominay, Antony, Onana, Holjund are all doing extremely well after leaving Man U. That club that calls themselves ‘Red Devils’ actually know how to demonise their players when they’re playing for them.” Elsewhere, a second added: “The curse has been lifted,” while a third wrote:
“It’s high time we all believed that the problem at United is actually not the coach or the players. How come they get so good once they leave?”
“Onana has definitely found his league and level,” another user said, while a fifth continued: “I have always said that Onana is the best Manchester United keeper.” Meanwhile, a sixth concluded: “Man United has always been the issue.”
