Heidenheim head coach expresses bewilderment at Leo Scienza’s Southampton sale

FC Heidenheim head coach Frank Schmidt has had a chance to comment on Leo Scienza’s last-minute transfer to Southampton. Schmidt offered up candid opinions on the current state of the transfer market and also explained why his relegation-threatened Bundesliga club opted not to sign a replacement for Scienza.

A week prior [to the transfer], he [Scienza] was telling me how wonderful and great everything is here,” Schmidt said. “That just shows how [quickly]  things can develop on the transfer market. As a coach, I take full responsibility [for the fact that we didn’t sign a replacement].

Millions are being spent on players and no one knows whether the player will make the team better or not,” Schmidt continued. “Sums are being thrown around for one player or another who has just had one injury-free year in the second or third division. I simply don’t understand that

“I didn’t see the point in throwing millions down the drain without knowing whether it would help the team at all,” Schmidt concluded. “When we look for new players, we can’t look in the Bundesliga. That’s just not possible. Even the money we made from Scienza wouldn’t be enough.”
