As reported by Sport1, Hansi Flick and his staff do not regret not calling up Mats Hummels for the World Cup in Qatar and Flick instead turned to youth, calling up Southampton’s Armel Bella-Kotchap.
Flick reportedly had reasoning for doing such a thing. He prefers an extremely attacking style of play which is risky and can lead to counter-attacks, which he believes with Hummels would’ve been a tricky situation. Additionally, Hummels’ great form has come in a Borussia Dortmund team under Edin Terzic who plays a completely different style of play to that of Flick’s more possession-based football.
Hummels last played for Germany at Euro 2020, starting all four of Germany’s games as they were knocked out of the round of 16, losing to England 2-0.
Germany’s defence was a talking point of their early exit at the World Cup with neither of Antonio Rüdiger’s partners in Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck matching the standard of the Real Madrid centre-back whilst the full-back positions were equally put under scrutiny due to their lack of quality.
