Borussia Dortmund’s star striker Serhou Guirassy was ruled out at short notice ahead of their game against Mainz this afternoon.
The Guinean marksman grabbed his thigh during the warm-up and then signaled that he couldn’t start as was originally planned.
BVB head coach Niko Kovač had to act fast with 20 minutes to kick-off and trusted Julian Brandt to take over from the 29-year-old’s spot.
Guirassy had suffered a blow to his thigh during the week and was only able to participate partially in training on Thursday.
However, Kovač had said at the press conference before the Mainz match that Guirassy would be okay to start.
“Today [Thursday] he only participated in parts of the team training, but I think everything will be fine again by the weekend,” he said.
