Borussia Mönchengladbach have been active in the January transfer window, signing three players. Hugo Bolin, Ko Takai and Alejo Sarco all joined the Foals, who also explored the possibility of signing a former player.
Kicker report that Gladbach wanted to sign a player with more experience, and considered a return for Ko Itakura, who joined Dutch side Ajax for €10.5m in August 2025. The Japan international has started 13 of his 14 Eredivisie appearances in 2025/26, and so a move for the central defender would have likely demanded a significant sum.
Sitting three points above Mainz who occupy the promotion/relegation play-off, Borussia Mönchengladbach are winless in their last four Bundesliga games, while they host Bayer Leverkusen this weekend as Eugen Polanski’s side look to secure their top flight status for 2026/27.
