Although Jon Jones is to the majority of MMA fans the greatest fighter of all time, Georges St-Pierre is always right there in the discussion when discussing the all-time UFC greats. The Canadian is undoubtedly the greatest welterweight the UFC has ever seen and is one of the most decorated fighters of all time, not just in terms of championships, but also his resume. During his seven-year stint at the very top of the UFC welterweight division, St-Pierre faced the absolute best fighters alive and some of the GOATs of the game.
At a recent fan Q&A event prior to UFC 315, ‘Rush’ was quizzed by fans over whom the toughest opponent he ever faced in his UFC career. Given the fact that the Canadian faced so many elite fighters throughout his professional MMA career, you would think that he would have to think long and hard about his answer, however, he seemed to already know his answer before being asked.

Georges St-Pierre Names BJ Penn As His Toughest Ever Opponent
GSP fought Penn twice and defeated him twice
Out of all the elite competition Georges St-Pierre came up against during his time fighting at the very top of the UFC’s welterweight division, BJ Penn gave him the toughest test. During a recent fan Q&A event prior to UFC 315, ‘Rush’ was asked who his toughest opponent was, and although he had the privilege of fighting the likes of Matt Hughes, Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit, he didn’t have to think twice when naming ‘The Prodigy.’

Penn is well-known for being one of the first American UFC fighters who was elite absolutely everywhere the fight went, and this was a big factor behind St-Pierre’s answer, as he also credited Penn’s all-around skill.
“I would say the best guy I fought in terms of skill was BJ Penn. His nickname was ‘The Prodigy,’ because he was the first American to become a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt champion, I think, in like three years and a half.
When going into greater depth about why Penn is the toughest fighter he has ever fought, St-Pierre described him as “the perfect fighter” and also credited his speed, claiming it was like fighting someone who was teleporting.
“He was a real prodigy. At the time, he was like the perfect fighter. He was so fast. I remember the first time I fought him, I threw a jab, and I used to be very fast. And when I threw that jab, he was behind me.
I was like ‘What the hell, this guy just teleported himself?’ He was incredibly fast, incredibly skilled, and very hard to deal with.”
It is refreshing to hear St-Pierre have such glowing reviews of Penn, as although he was a pioneer for the UFC’s early growth and is undoubtedly one of the best and most decorated fighters ever, when current MMA fans speak about the greats of the sport, he unfortunately isn’t brought up much nowadays.
