Freiburg confirm Burkart’s permanent departure

SC Freiburg confirmed the permanent departure of once-heralded attacking prospect Nishan Burkart on Tuesday evening.

Swiss striker Nishan Burkart will remain in his native country after FC Winterthur opted to pull a permanent purchase option following a one-year-loan stint. The 23-year-old joined Freiburg on a free-transfer from Manchester United’s youth academy in 2019. At one point prior to the beginning of the 2021/22 season, it appeared as if he might break into the SC Freiburg senior side.

The experienced Swiss youth international’s hoped-for development nevertheless never materialized. Burkart managed to make 24 league appearances for the nearly-relegated Swiss club this past season, scoring three goals and providing an assist. The Aarau native still had to spend some time with the reserves.

No information as to how much Freiburg gained on the sale is available at this time. The Breisguaer did pocket €25,000 in loan fees as part of last summer’s deal. Burkart’s new contract with his new club runs through 2027. He made just one appearance for the Freiburg senior side near the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
