Olympiacos have announced that, following the resignation of Míchel, another former Marseille coach has taken charge of the Greek champions on an interim basis in José Anigo, who until now had been the club’s Sporting Director.
The Athens outfit had been on a seven-game unbeaten run until the Spaniard’s announcement, and currently sit three points off local rivals AEK at the top of the table.
Having had two spells on the Marseille bench – between 2003-05 and then 2013/14, Anigo, a former defender, undertook brief spells at two Hellenic clubs, Levadiakos and Panionios. He then joined the country’s most successful club in an initial backroom role last year, having spent some time at Nottingham Forest in between.
Anigo will take charge of a team which includes several familiar faces to Ligue 1 followers – namely former French internationals Yann M’Vila and Mathieu Valbuena, as well as former Marseille forwards Konrad de la Fuente and Cédric Bakambu. Their next fixtures sees them take on PAOK, who lie three points behind them in the championship play-off table.
