Former Lyon goalkeeper ‘very concerned’ about former club’s future

This week’s decision to relegate Olympique Lyonnais has many supporters and former players, understandably concerned about the status of this club moving forward.

The former seven-time Ligue 1 winners were relegated by the DNCG because of their financial situation; a decision the club will be appealing.

Goalkeeper Grégory Coupet was a part of all seven of those league titles and has spoken out on the news and the status of the club going forward.

“I’m not going to comment on what it’s like to be a leader, but I’m like all Lyonnais, I’m very concerned about the situation of the club,” Coupet told BFM Lyon (and transcribed by L’Équipe) on Wednesday at the funeral of former French footballer Bernard Lacombe.

Coupet featured for Les Gones between 1997 and 2008 and served as the goalkeeper coach from 2018-2020, winning a Coupe de France title with them in the 2007-08 season.

To try and get back into good financial standing, the club sold numerous players during the transfer windows this year, but that hasn’t been enough to convince the DNCG that they’re in good enough financial standing.

This past season, OL finished sixth in the Ligue 1 standings with 57 points.
