After three successive 1-0 wins in the Bundesliga, Freiburg continued their winning run on Friday night by beating Werder Bremen at home – but by a much bigger margin.
Kiliann Sildillia opened the scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick before Vincenzo Grifo made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute with a direct free-kick.
Werder had a golden opportunity to get back into the game when they were awarded a penalty for Sildillia’s handball towards the end of the first half, but Andre Silva’s spot-kick was saved by Noah Atubolu.
Grifo grabbed his second of the night in the 57th minute before Ritsu Doan completed the scoring with two goals as Freiburg ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.
The win lifts Julian Schuster’s side up to fourth in the table, while Werder are 10th ahead of the weekend’s remaining Bundesliga fixtures.
