In a recent story on Instagram (via The Evening Standard), Jose Enrique urged his former club, Liverpool, to move in for Benfica forward Darwin Nunez. Enrique said,
“I hope this is no true and he (Nunez) come to us instead.
“Top player that can become world-class under Klopp if we sell Sadio Mane.”
Nunez’s Excellent Numbers In Portuguese Football
Nunez has enjoyed a brilliant campaign at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica as he has put in several productive displays as the focal point of Benfica’s attack. The 22-year-old has banged in 34 goals and secured four assists in 41 matches for the Portuguese outfit this season in all competitions.
The Artigas-born talent has led the line well for the Portuguese outfit based on his average of 3.0 shots, 1.1 key passes, 0.5 crosses and 1.4 dribbles per game in Liga Portugal. However, his link-up has left a lot to be desired after he completed 67.1% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
Is Nunez A Good Fit For Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp?
Nunez can make some intelligent runs with the ball in the final third and can set up some decent chances for others around him. He has transformed himself into a deadly finisher in front of the opponent’s goal.
The Uruguay international has been remarkably consistent with his numbers in the opposition half during the 2021-22 Liga Portugal season.
Nunez is good enough to serve as an ideal replacement for Sadio Mane who is facing an uncertain future at Anfield with his current contract set to run out next summer.
As long as the Benfica youngster can make a smooth transition to life in English football, Jurgen Klopp would be the ideal man to unlock the best out of him in the coming seasons. Nunez has what it takes to be a good fit for Liverpool‘s style of play but needs to work on improving his passing in and around the opponent’s penalty box. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of signing him, so the Reds will do well to bring him to the northwest of England ahead of the new campaign.
