Emi Martinez exit speculation grows as Aston Villa close in on new goalkeeper

Aston Villa are close to signing Dutch goalkeeper Marco Bizot, per the Daily Mirror (July 11, Page 54).

But a move for the 34-year-old could signal an exit for Emiliano Martinez at Villa Park.

Martinez has been the first-choice goalkeeper since joining the Lions for £20 million in the summer of 2020.

The 32-year-old has made over 200 appearances over the last five seasons, but he appears to be ready for a new challenge elsewhere.

Martinez has four years left on his current contract, but Villa seek to reduce their wage bill and are open to an offer for one of their top earners.

Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a summer move, while the World Cup winner has also sparked strong interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Unai Emery’s side are attempting to sign a new keeper amid uncertainty over Martinez’s future and the fact that backup Robin Olsen has left upon the expiry of his deal.

They are now closing in on Bizot, who is reportedly keen to play in the Premier League.

The Dutch footballer played for Genk and AZ Alkmaar before joining Stade Brestois in 2021.

He was Brest’s number one last term when the French outfit finished ninth in Ligue 1, featuring in 41 games across all competitions and keeping 12 clean sheets in the process.

Bizot was awarded man of the match after making five crucial saves in their 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven in December.
