‘Definitely Him’ – Paul Scholes Names Who He Wants to Replace Ruben Amorim at Man Utd

Paul Scholes has said who he thinks would be a perfect replacement for Ruben Amorim as Manchester United manager.

Since arriving at Old Trafford in late 2024, former Sporting boss Amorim has struggled massively at the helm of Man United. He oversaw what was, based on league finish and points total, the club’s worst-ever season in the Premier League era.

The Portuguese has now had his long-awaited pre-season and summer transfer window, in which Man United completely revitalised their attack by signing Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo. Under Amorim, though, the club have continued to look worryingly inconsistent. Such form has seen substantial pressure mount on Amorim’s position, though there have been no concrete signs that the club are ready to part ways with the manager.

Despite this, multiple names have been touted for the managerial role at Man United and now, club legend Paul Scholes, who has worked in both punditry and management since his retirement as a player, has revealed who he thinks would be an ideal replacement, as per United in Focus.

Scholes Names Howe as Potential Replacement

Eddie Howe

Discussing who he would like to see in charge of Man United on The Overlap, Scholes said:

“Eddie Howe, Eddie Howe. I’m not sure about his mate [Newcastle assistant manager Jason Tindall], but definitely him.”

Since arriving at Newcastle United in 2021, Howe has turned the Magpies into one of the best teams in England. He has guided them to two Champions League finishes in three full seasons and two Carabao Cup finals. By winning the second of these Wembley clashes in 2025, he won Newcastle their first English trophy in 70 years.

Howe, who established himself in the Premier League with Bournemouth, a club he took there from League Two, has long been regarded as one of the top flight’s best managers. His Newcastle side are one that play with a high level of intensity and are consistently tough to beat.

On paper, Howe would be an exceptional appointment for Man United. In theory, the 47-year-old’s rebuild of Newcastle is precisely what the Red Devils need, having languished in recent years compared to their lofty expectations as a club.

Acquiring Howe, however, would be another matter entirely. Newcastle would, presumably, be immensely reluctant to let their manager depart, though as they have shown with recent player signings, Man United can be hard to turn down even at their lowest, given their monumental stature.
