Deco offers extension update on Frenkie de Jong and Robert Lewandowski

Barcelona Sporting Director Deco has offered a double update on contract extension talks with Frenkie de Jong and Robert Lewandowski.

Both players are out of contract next summer and will be eligible to discuss free transfer terms with non-Spanish clubs from January.

The club have been working on a renewal for De Jong since the end of 2025, but little progress has been made, amid negotiations over previous outstanding salary payments.

Club president Joan Laporta has previously stated his confidence over an agreement being reached with the Dutchman and Deco has now reinforced the club’s stance.

“We’re in talks. I think we’ll reach an agreement. He’s an important player for us,” as per Mundo Deportivo.

“I think he’s happy at Barcelona. We’re happy with him, too. I don’t think there will be any problem.”

However, Deco admitted the situation is slightly different for Lewandowski, with the club holding an option to extend the 37-year-old’s link into the 2026/27 campaign.

Injuries have disrupted his start to the season, and despite his incredible goal record, the club are cautious over a deal that would take him well beyond his 38th birthday.

“That’s a different situation. Robert was important and he remains so for us. I also think that, given his age and his career, he’ll assess it year by year. There comes a time in a career when we don’t make many plans for the future.

“I think he’s focused on this year. We are, too, so we’ll see. He’s a player who depends a lot on his will, how he feels, and how he sees things. We’ll see his progress through the year and then we’ll talk about it.”

Lewandowski is also determined to play in Poland’s incoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as he looks to lead them to the tournament next summer.
