Chelsea star Marc Cucurella has this week opened up on his Barcelona past, adamant that departing the Blaugrana was the best thing for his career.
Defender Cucurella is for his part currently in the midst of arguably the best run of form of his career to date.
Now the undisputed first-choice left-back at Chelsea, the 27-year-old has long been shutting opposing wingers down courtesy of an impressive combination of pace, defensive nous, and tackling.
Added to his threat going forward, Cucurella has positioned himself firmly in the argument for football’s very best in his role.
And yet, had things played out a little differently, the Spanish international could have found himself plying his club trade with one of the top clubs in his home country.
Cucurella is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy.
Back in 2020, with game time continuing to prove difficult to come by at senior level in Catalunya’s capital, however, the stopper made the call to move on.
He first joined Getafe, before Brighton & Hove Albion, and ultimately Chelsea.
Speaking to the media whilst on international duty this week, Cucurella was in turn draw on his Barcelona past.
And the Blues standout, in quotes cited by Diario Sport, was typically honest in responding:
“I wouldn’t change my career to have stayed at Barça, to be honest. Maybe if I had stayed I wouldn’t have had minutes and I wouldn’t have learned what I’ve learned. To play at the highest level it is key to have confidence, and outside Barça I found it. I wouldn’t change anything I’ve experienced.”
