Chelsea are ‘looking to’ bring Lyon defender Malo Gusto to Stamford Bridge before the end of the window, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has informed GIVEMESPORT.
The Blues have already completed several deals in January, with Benoit Badiashile, Mykhailo Mudryk, David Datro Fofana, Joao Felix, Andrey Santos and Noni Maduke all being acquired.
Chelsea transfer news – Malo Gusto
Recently, The Daily Mail reported that Chelsea are ready to submit an improved offer in the region of £30 million to try and land Gusto from Lyon. In order successfully negotiate a transfer, the Ligue 1 giants have insisted that the 19-year-old be loaned back to them from the Blues for the remainder of this term.
Nevertheless, Chelsea look to be against the idea of letting Gusto see out the rest of the campaign at the Groupama Stadium, with Potter keen to add some competition at right-back for Reece James.
Manchester United are also mooted to be monitoring the situation of Gusto, providing some rival interest which could develop into a transfer saga if no further progress is made from a Chelsea standpoint.
France youth cap Gusto has 18 months left on his contract at Lyon, with the deal being set to expire in the summer of 2024.
What has Dharmesh Sheth said about Malo Gusto?
Sky Sports journalist Sheth has stated that Gusto could be an ideal signing for Chelsea, as he is in the mould of what many would class as a ‘Graham Potter player’
Sheth told GMS: “I know they’ve got a massive squad already, but I think Todd Boehly especially wants to give Graham Potter what he wants to allow him to build his squad.
“This would fit the profile of a kind of Graham Potter player I think, young, someone who can be developed, so definitely something in this one. Potentially, Chelsea are looking to do this deal before the window closes.”
Would Malo Gusto be a good addition for Chelsea?
Capable of carrying out defensive work alongside providing a keen attacking threat, Gusto would be a handy asset for Chelsea to have moving forward that could eventually compete with James at right-back for a starting slot.
In 2022/23, the 19-year-old has made 15 appearances for Lyon across all competitions, claiming one assist, as per Transfermarkt.
Gusto has also managed to win an average of 2.1 tackles per match, according to WhoScored, showing his readiness to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in regardless of the environment he finds himself in.
For his age, the Décines-Charpieu-born defender has shown some commendable consistency for a Lyon side that have endured a frustrating campaign so far, earning himself a match rating of 7.02/10 for his exploits on the pitch.
With plenty of room to develop in years to come, Gusto would be a sensible acquisition that would suit Potter’s long-term vision at the club.
