Chelsea target Malo Gusto would be wanted back on loan at current club Olympique Lyonnais until the end of the season, if the Blues are able to secure a January deal, journalist Simon Phillips revealed to GIVEMESPORT.
Gusto is tipped to sign for Chelsea this month, but Phillips insists there are some details surrounding the deal which still need to be finalised.
Chelsea transfer news – Malo Gusto
According to the MailOnline, Chelsea are eyeing up a move for Lyon right-back Gusto, with a view to bringing the 19-year-old to Stamford Bridge.
Or at least, as per the report, that’s what Chelsea’s preference is, with the Ligue 1 side hoping to hold on to the player until the summer.
It would see the Blues spend £30 million on the French-born defender this month, before loaning him back to Lyon for the remainder of the campaign.
However, the west Londoners are said to want Gusto on their roster as soon as possible, in order to provide cover to the injury-ridden Reece James.
But there are now suggestions the deal itself could hinge on Chelsea agreeing to Lyon’s preferred option.
What has Simon Phillips said about Gusto to Chelsea?
A player tipped with a bright future, Chelsea would be luring a top talent to Stamford Bridge, should they get the deal across the line.
However, in an interview with GMS, journalist Phillips hinted the Blues might have to wait until the summer to get their hands on the teenager.
On the 19-year-old, Phillips said: “One of the stumbling blocks I’ve heard at the moment is that Lyon are trying to get Gusto to go back on loan and spend the rest of the season with them.
“Obviously, Chelsea aren’t overly keen about doing that, but they haven’t ruled it out either.”
Would Gusto be a worthwhile signing for Chelsea?
Transfer insider Dean Jones recently told GMS that Gusto was subject to interest from Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag’s side said to be keen.
While a move to Old Trafford didn’t materialise, it looks as if Gusto could end up in the Premier League with Chelsea instead.
Capped at under-21 level for France, Gusto is an attacking right-back capable of creating chances for his teammates.
According to FBref, Gusto ranks inside the top 20 per cent of fullbacks for shot-creating actions, averaging over two per game.
What’s more, Gusto is accomplished with the ball at his feet, attempting over 75 passes per match, while boasting a completion rate over 80%.
