Chelsea Fans Cast Clear Verdict on Liam Delap After Club World Cup Debut vs LAFC

Chelsea fans have shared their thoughts on Liam Delap online after the former Ipswich Town striker made his debut during the 2-0 FIFA Club World Cup victory over LAFC on Monday night. The 22-year-old opted to make the move to Stamford Bridge from Portman Road this summer, despite interest from the likes of Manchester United in his services.

Sporting the infamous number nine shirt, Delap came on as a second-half substitute in what was a comfortable, if uninspiring, victory to kick off the tournament for Enzo Maresca’s men. And some supporters have shared their first impressions of the budding England star.

Delap Shines on Chelsea Debut

The striker looked sharp and was an immediate threat

Despite only coming onto the pitch in the 64th minute, Delap was one of Chelsea’s brightest sparks of the night, making himself a nuisance while also showing a willingness to run in behind, hold the ball up, and showcase his physical attributes wherever possible.

Though he failed to produce a shot on goal, he managed to create two big chances in his cameo. The first saw him beat his defender on the outside and drive towards goal at an angle before cutting the ball back to Enzo Fernandez, whose shot was blocked behind for a corner.

The same duo would get their rewards shortly after, though, as this time the striker delivered an inch-perfect cross to the onrushing Argentine, who was able to control under pressure and slot home from close range.

The assist was the highlight of what was a promising start to life at his new club for Delap, and fans were quick to shower the new arrival with praise online.

“Liam Delap assist. Looks the real deal,” stated one after the striker’s playmaking prowess was on display, while another claimed: “Liam Delap is a special footballer and I feel sad for those who don’t get it yet.”

A third excitedly added: “The Cole Palmer and Liam Delap combination is going to be quite something,” with a fourth suggesting: “The number 9 curse might actually end with Liam Delap.” A fifth capped the praise off by saying: “That’s a lovely assist from Liam Delap,” showing that the former Tractor Boy has already made a positive mark at his new home.
