Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to lose midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Real Madrid this summer, despite Carlo Ancelotti being a fan of the player, according to Tom Barclay of The Sun.
Antonio Conte has overseen a busy few months of business at Hotspur Way and will not want to lose any of his star men ahead of the September 1 deadline.
What is the latest on Hojbjerg?
The £100,000 per-week midfielder has been targeted by the La Liga giants as a potential replacement for Casemiro, after the Brazilian joined Manchester United earlier this month, according to The Telegraph.
Ancelotti is an admirer of the Denmark international and tried to take him to Everton during his time as Toffees’ manager, the report states, before Tottenham won the race.
Hojbjerg joined Spurs from Southampton in the summer of 2020 for £15 million, penning a five-year deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, of which he still has three remaining.
What has Barclay said on the situation?
Barclay understands that Ancelotti is a fan of Hojbjerg and, having admired him during his previous role, could look to bring him to the Bernabeu.
But he adds, with Real Madrid already splashing out on Aurelien Tchouameni, he is unlikely to do so before the deadline next week.
Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m told that he does like Hojbjerg. After I heard that I thought about when he left for Tottenham, Everton were the other team that were in for him and I think Ancelotti was the manager at the time. So it’s not a completely outlandish suggestion that Ancelotti would like him. But I just don’t think Real Madrid are actually going to replace him [Casemiro] because, remember, they’ve brought in Tchouameni already and have a few different players in that position.”
Would losing Hojbjerg be a blow?
Hojbjerg may have only been a Tottenham player for just over two years but he has been a central figure throughout that time, making 104 appearances.
Currently valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt, and with time remaining on his deal, it would be no surprise to see the club hold out for a significant sum for his services too.
But, despite already having Hojbjerg at his disposal, Conte has chosen to bring in a host of midfield stars since his arrival.
Rodrigo Bentancur joined from Juventus in January while £29 million was splashed on the signing of Yves Bissouma in the summer.
Meanwhile, Oliver Skipp is working his way back from an injury layoff. While Hojbjerg is an important player, there are also others ready to step in if required too.
