Cesc Fabregas speaks on Manchester United’s interest in Como’s Assane Diao

In their first season in Serie A, Como have given an excellent account of themselves. Led by Cesc Fabregas, the side sit 13th and are under no risk of getting relegated. Their philosophy has been to rely on some excellent young players who have done very well. Nico Paz, Maxence Caquaret, Maximo Perrone and Alex Valle all form the backbone of the team but perhaps no one has been as impactful as January signing Assane Diao.

The winger broke through last season at Real Betis and earlier this year, Como spent €12m to bring the 19 year old to Italy. Since then, in 13 games, he has scored 6 times and assisted another, becoming the club’s joint top scorer.

This has caught the attention of European giants, in particular Manchester United, who are crying out for a spark in attack. When asked about this interest before the club’s game against Torino, Fabregas spoke (via sportitalia.it) about the philosophy he is instilling at the club. “We are trying to go for young, talented players who were not playing: they do well here and obviously their value increases. There is no mentality of speculating and selling, they come here to grow and improve the team. Then obviously, Manchester can come and ask for Diao by offering 40 million, but it is not a given that he will leave . The objective is to create a path, with players who are functional to the characteristics, working with them. Obviously the value increases, but the important thing is that they are the right players for us.
