Cameron Menzies Punches Table in Crazy World Darts Championship Outburst

Cameron Menzies completely lost his head and smashed up a water table after being dumped out of the World Darts Championship by Charlie Manby in the first round at Alexandra Palace.

In an act that Sky Sports’ pundit Glen Durrant claimed Menzies would ‘regret for the rest of his life’, the 26th seed could be seen throwing uppercuts at the water table seconds after going down by three sets to two.

Having already missed six match darts, Manby finally secured the win at the seventh time of asking by nailing double one. However, while the victor wheeled away in celebration, the Sky Sports’ cameras panned to Menzies who landed three hard uppercuts on the underside of the table in sheer frustration at his defeat.

The outburst drew blood from Menzies’ knuckles, which he then wiped on his own face as match referee Kirk Bevins walked over to him to instruct him to stop battering the furniture.

Menzies had looked well-placed to progress to round two when he led 2-1 in sets, but an unlikely fightback from Sheffield-based rookie Manby left the more experienced player absolutely fuming.

Although he apologised to those around him and was swiftly ushered off stage by the referee, the matter has been referred to the Darts Regulatory Authority, with the player facing a fine and a potential ban.

Speaking after the match, the 36-year-old apologised profusely for his actions, mentioning that the recent passing of a family member had hit him hard.

“First of all, I would to apologise for what happened. I am sorry that I reacted in the manner that I did. It’s not an excuse, but I have had a lot of things on my mind recently and I suppose it all just became too much at the end.

“It has not been easy time for me with my uncle Gary passing away recently. I saw him four days before he died and he gave a look which told he much he thought of me. Had I won the game against Charlie, my second match would have been on the day of Gary’s funeral and that’s has been lost on me.

“Let me say again, that’s no excuse for what I did on the stage. It was the wrong thing to do and I don’t want it to take anything away from Charlie. He played well. This is not how I would like people to view me. Yes, I can get emotional at times, but not like that and that wasn’t right.”

PDC Release Statement After Cameron Menzies’ Actions

The PDC have also released a statement following Menzies’ outburst. Instead of condemning his actions in the immediate aftermath, PDC chief executive Matt Porter has offered his support to the Scotsman.

He said, per Oche180: “I spoke with Cameron and his management before he left the venue, and he knows there is support available from the PDC and the PDPA.

“Any incident of this nature is reported to the Darts Regulation Authority for review, but our main priority is the player’s health and wellbeing.”

It seems very likely that Menzies will be punished for his actions but the severity remains to be seen. His conqueror, Manby, will now play either Matt Campbell or Adam Sevada in the second round.
